How to distribute household tasks more evenly at home

As it turns out, even an “outsourced” home task takes work.

In my interview with Valerie Recore, a Certified Fair Play Method Facilitator, she dishes ALL the tips on how to distribute the household load more evenly to gain more precious time, efficiency, sanity...and to avoid those passive aggressive comments with your partner or kids about the dishes.

What is The Fair Play Method

The Fair Play Method is, in essence, a method to divide up household tasks…fairly. It’s a way to ensure that you have a point person for each task in the household, and that the person in charge is FULLY in charge. This avoids sneaky residual tasks and/or mental burdening.

It was developed by author Eve Rodsky who says The Fair Play Method is, “...a system for couples seeking balance, efficiency, and peace in their lives.”

This method takes the shape of a book, a documentary and a deck of cards.

How to start using the Fair Play Method

Step 1: Understand your ‘why’ for using the Fair Play Method

Determine what is important to you, your family, your career and your own life.

Step 2: Briefly learn about the method

Get the book, watch the documentary or get the deck of cards and start with just ONE task each that you can divide up to test out.

Step 3: Set some ground rules

Understand, with each task that has been assigned, what the minimum standard of care is for that task e.g. is the garbage to be taken out each night?

Warning: positive outcomes from using the Fairplay Method are very likely

Valerie shares that a person can expect to see results that include the reduction of…

  • Passive aggressive comments

  • Post-it notes or “honey-do” lists

  • Overflowing trash and ignoring it because you feel like you “always do it”

  • Being in constant verbal or silent conflict
